Helping Improve Waste Diversion at Humber College

BEST Service Pros.

Since 2019, our teams have been supporting waste diversion efforts at Humber Polytechnic, helping turn sustainability goals into everyday routines across campus. Working alongside Humber, our teams sort materials correctly, take part in hands-on training, and help identify issues such as contamination, overflowing bins, confusing stations, or collection streams that are not working as expected. These observations help BEST and Humber adjust signage, sorting practices, and collection processes where needed.

And those efforts are adding up. Across eight Humber buildings with complete data for 2024 and 2025, the combined diversion rate increased from 31% to 39%, while the amount of material diverted from landfill grew by 119 metric tonnes, or 42%. Seven of the eight buildings improved, and none declined. Organics and cardboard were among the biggest contributors to that progress.

The case study also showed that improving waste diversion is not only about asking people to sort better. It means making sure the right collection streams are available, listening to what frontline teams are seeing, and using data to understand where changes are needed. At Humber, that combination is helping build a stronger waste diversion system across campus.

Less Chemicals, Same Great Results

BEST Service Pros.

BEST has started introducing the Twister Pad System at selected sites as part of our commitment to more sustainable floor care. Instead of relying on traditional chemical strippers, the system uses specialized pads and water to remove old floor finish, restore surfaces, and build back their shine. Once the restoration process is complete, the same pads can also be used as part of regular floor maintenance, helping keep floors looking their best over time.

Reducing the use of chemical strippers is one more way we are lowering the environmental impact of our operations while continuing to deliver the high standards our clients expect. At the same time, it gives our teams another effective tool to maintain and restore floors using a process that supports both quality results and our sustainability goals.
