Summer is here! Summer is often filled with fun outdoor activities, trips to the beach, quality time with family and friends, and generous amounts of ice cream and cold drinks. As we find our own ways to make the most of the summer months, we also need to be aware of the common risks during this time of the year. Here are three tips to stay safe this summer.

 1.     Stay hydrated

Dehydration is a common occurrence during the summer month resulting when your body loses more fluids than you take in. Common causes of dehydration include excessive sweating, vomiting, fever, or intense bouts of diarrhea.

The best way to avoid dehydration is by drinking more fluids. Make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day even if you don’t feel thirsty. Feeling thirsty is a sign of dehydration so make sure you drink at regular intervals, especially when outside in hot temperatures.

 2.     Dress appropriately

When selecting your next summer outfit, choose something light-coloured and loose fitted. Dark colours absorb more heat than lighter colours. The more heat you absorb the hotter you will feel. Wearing light colours will help you stay cool under the sun. Wearing loose fitted clothing will also allow for more air circulation and help dry off sweat faster keeping you feeling cool and fresh.

 3.     Keep fire safety in mind

One of the unfortunate side-effects of high temperatures is an increase in the number of fires. If planning for outdoor trips such as hiking or camping, make sure to check with local authorities and camp websites for advisory on fire safety. Many campsites place fire bans or restrictions during periods of high heat, so make sure you are aware of the rules and be respectful of them for your own safety and for the safety of those around you. Pay attention to signs posted on hiking trails, as some trails may be closed due to fire hazards. Lastly, always dispose of all flammable materials properly to avoid igniting an unintentional fire.
