Hand Dryers Vs. Paper Towels

August 5, 2014 - Posted By Livia Valpassos

Looking to make a switch between paper towels and hand dryers? Cleanlink did a study to look at which is the better option. Their study reviled some important information on hygiene and the spread of bacteria.

The study showed that using paper towels to dry hands is more hygienic that using an electric hand dryer. Here is why:

  • Paper towel drying reduced the average number of bacteria on your hands by 77%
  • Warm air dryers increased the number of bacteria on the hands by 254%
  • Jet air dryers increased the number of bacteria by 15%

Although the percentages are quite telling of the results from the study are expressed by Redway saying,

“The results of all parts of this study suggest that the use of warm air dryers and jet air dryers should be carefully considered in locations where hygiene is of paramount importance, such as hospitals, clinics, schools, nurseries, care homes, kitchens and other food preparation areas,” said  Redway. “In addition, paper hand towel use is highly beneficial for improved hygiene in any other facilities open to the public, such as factories, offices, bars and restaurants.”
