Heavy Duty Custodian

The Heavy Duty Custodian is responsible for performing custodial duties, minor maintenance and other miscellaneous duties in order to ensure that buildings and facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe and sanitary manner.  The incumbent will be responsible for cleaning activities that include, but are not limited to; washing, scrubbing and polishing floors by utilizing auto scrubbers, burnishers and carpet cleaning equipment. The Heavy Duty Custodian is required to remove heavy garbage and operate a compactor, clean over 12 foot high windows using a tucker pole and lift furniture. The incumbent reports to a Lead Hand, Supervisor or an Assistant Site Manager.


  • Clean and care for building and facilities ensuring they are maintained in a safe and healthy manner:
    • Clean offices, auditoriums, and class rooms:
      • Mop tile/concrete floor areas
      • Vacuum all carpeted areas
      • Dust all furniture, baseboards and fixtures as required
      • Wash all finger marks from walls, doors, hardware and glass
      • Wash and buff floors with floor polisher
      • Empty all waste baskets and garbage cans
    • Clean washrooms and kitchen and/or dining areas:
      • Wash and disinfect all washroom floors, toilets, toilet seats, hand dryers and fixtures
      • Clean all sinks, counters and mirrors
      • Spot clean walls and toilet partitions
      • Replenish toilet tissue and soap as needed
      • Clean kitchen sink and counters
      • Clean tables, chair backs and seats
      • Load and turn on dishwasher
      • Empty all waste and garbage cans
    • Clean halls, entrances/exits and reception areas:
      • Keep outside area near exit/entrance clear of ice and debris
      • Clean, wash and disinfect drinking fountains
      • Wash all finger marks from walls, doors, hardware and glass
      • Wash and buff floors with floor polisher
    • Maintain storage areas and cleaning equipment, materials and supplies in a safe and orderly manner in order to ensure the safety of staff and the public:
    • Secure storage areas
    • Ensure cleaning materials/supplies are stored in a safe and orderly manner
  • Report need for equipment repairs and stock shortages
  • Place garbage in outside storage bin
  • Perform and/or report minor maintenance repairs
  • Report damage and acts of vandalism
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to use auto scrubbers, burnishers and carpet cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to use tucker pole
  • Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products and equipment
  • Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
  • Ability to read and understand labels and instructions, particularly on the use and application of cleaning chemicals and products
  • Ability to answer company or customer issued telecommunication devices in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work with little supervision.
